🚩 Jagannath Ji Rath Yatra: Significance, Rituals & Puja Essentials
Share
Every year, millions of devotees around the world wait eagerly for the divine moment when Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra come out of their temple to give darshan to all. This sacred event is known as the Jagannath Rath Yatra, one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals, especially in Puri, Odisha.
But the essence of Rath Yatra is not confined to Puri alone—it’s celebrated in temples and homes across India. Here's everything you need to know about its spiritual meaning, how to celebrate it at home, and what Bhakti Samagri you need to prepare for this divine occasion.
🌟 What is Jagannath Ji Rath Yatra?
Rath Yatra (रथ यात्रा), meaning "Chariot Festival", marks the annual journey of Lord Jagannath (a form of Krishna), his elder brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra from the Jagannath Temple in Puri to the Gundicha Temple.
This journey symbolizes the Lord stepping out of his divine abode to meet his devotees—especially those who may not be allowed inside temples due to caste, creed, or social restrictions. It represents inclusiveness, humility, and divine grace.
🗓️ When is Rath Yatra Celebrated?
Rath Yatra is celebrated on the Dwitiya Tithi (2nd day) of the Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month (usually in June–July). In 2025, RathYatra will be observed on 27th June.
🛕 Rituals & Celebrations of Rath Yatra:
Snana Purnima:
This bathing ritual takes place a few weeks before Rath Yatra, where the deities are bathed with 108 pots of water.
Anasara:
After Snana Purnima, the deities are placed in isolation for 15 days during a period known as Anasara.
Pahandi Bije:
On Rath Yatra day, the deities are taken out of the Jagannath Temple in a ceremonial procession called Pahandi Bije and placed on their respective chariots.
Chhera Pahara:
The Gajapati King of Puri performs Chhera Pahara, sweeping the chariots with a golden broom and sprinkling sandalwood water.
The Procession (Rath Yatra):
Devotees pull the massive chariots along the Grand Road (Bada Danda) to the Gundicha Temple. Devotees consider it highly auspicious to pull the ropes of the Rath, chanting "Jai Jagannath!". It is said that even a moment of service during Rath Yatra can bring salvation.
Gundicha Temple Stay:
The deities stay at the Gundicha Temple for nine days before returning to the Jagannath Temple.
Hera Panchami:
On the fifth day of the deities' stay at the Gundicha Temple, Goddess Lakshmi visits in search of Lord Jagannath, marking a playful interaction between the deities.
Bahuda Yatra:
The deities' return journey to the Jagannath Temple is called Bahuda Yatra.
Niladri Bije:
The final ritual of the festival is Niladri Bije, where the deities are reinstalled in the main Jagannath Temple.
